In My Mailbox (2)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi @ The Story Siren.

So another week has passed and I have gotten some new books! Yay! I mean come on who doesn't like new books!?

The second part of my Amazon shipment came in so I was super excited about that. And I got a book I won from a contest! Here's what I got:

I can't remember the days, so sometime last week...

   1. The Iron King ARC by Julie Kagawa - Won from the lovely ladies at  MundieMoms
The rest I purchased from Amazon:
   2. Midnight Alley by Rachel Caine
   3. Feast of Fools by Rachel Caine
   4. Lords of Misrule by Rachel Caine
   5. Fade Out by Rachel Caine
   6. Fallen by Lauren Kate
7.The Maze Runner by James Dashner

Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to read ANY of them... I'm still trying to finish Firespell by Chloe Neill and I have had soooo much going on. But I'm really getting into it now so it won't take long!! :)

Did you get anything good this week!?

Don't forget to check out my review for Firespell tomorrow, I will have it done, and a contest!!

A note for you!

Hey everyone! So sorry I was absent today, had a lot going on! Threw a surprise party for my Aunt's bday! It was so much fun and she was surprised so double bonus for me! I am in the middle of a few books right now and I promise to post a review by monday at the latest for at least one of them! I should spend more time reading instead of chatting online all night.. ahem *kari* ahem...

Anyways... keep on the lookout for my upcoming reviews and don't forget to enter my contests if you haven't done so yet. I might be *wink wink* posting yet another contest on Monday so check back to see what you can win! :) I love keeping you all on your toes... or I guess I should say fingertips... lol

Ok maybe I am really bad at making jokes...

Alright I really have to go to bed because 3:30am comes very early and I should try to at least get a little sleep before work.. if only I had the day off, I could get so much done!

Night all! :)

Guest post and a contest! :)

Today to continue along with the celebration of reaching 100 followers, Kari from A Good Addiction has decided to stop by!

--------------------

Howdy bloggers!

It's Kari, from A Good Addiction, taking over Sherry's blog for awhile. *insert evil and way cheesy laugh*

To help her celebrate hitting 100 followers, I'm here to talk about... me. Makes sense, right? So for those of you that follow me, you already know that I've plugged her blog out over on my own in my feature Getting To Know The Little Guys. I've been following Sherry pretty much since I started blogging back in September. She has great reviews with her honest opinion and she's a totally sweet person. What's not to love about her and her blog? Hopefully some of you found her blog by way of that feature because that's the whole point of it- spotlight the small but still awesome blogs that people just don't know about.

I started blogging as an outlet for my thoughts on books. Like most of you, I'm an avid buyer and tend to purchase way faster than I can read. I'm also an aspiring writer and read even more furiously basically as research. The more I've worked on my own writing, the more analytical I've become in my reviews of books. I loved watching how authors develop their plots and when you really think about it, so many events that happen seem so simple and obvious. Often when I'm writing, I find myself thinking that some planned 'twist' seems way too easy and simple and obvious but for the reader, it probably isn't. There is just so many possibilities that are out there with every book it's hard to predict what will come if it's written the right way. I also really look at characters more so now than I used to and I think my reviews are getting better as a result of all this. I'm working on two separate works right now, one that's YA/fantasy and another that's edgy, angsty, etc- not really sure what that genre is called but it's in line with books like Going Too Far, Leftovers, etc- the ones that deal with the issues. I've actually only been working on this one for about three weeks but I'm flying through it- I finished chapter 11 today and have a lot planned out which is great for me. I usually don't do much by way of planning and just write and hope it's good.

But that's enough about me... if you really want to know more, just check out my blog. Or my forum- I started a book club/discussion forum that Sherry here is also a member of. It just started but I am hoping it builds more. I'm working on setting up author interviews and chats/visits to my boards and it's pretty much a place to talk freely about each week's books without having to worry about spoiling anything. Okay, now I'm done talking about my blog.

As part of Sherry's 100 followers celebration, I'm here to tell you guys about my all time favorite book- Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult. She is by far my favorite author and I am envious of her writing skills in so many ways. This book is heartbreaking but thrusts the subject of school bullying into such a bright light. Peter's story gets hard to read sometimes because it filled with so much pain- I ran a complete gauntlet of emotions reading this one and there were about a hundred shades of gray hit with this book. Recently, I read Catherine Ryan Hyde's Diary of a Witness which also deals with this subject but is written on more of a teen level. It is also an amazing read but 19M still stands out there for me. I had read 2 of Jodi's books prior to this one but 19M is what really made me a hardcore Jodi fan. As for YA books, I think my favorite so far is either the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Meade or the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. They are both brilliant and enticing and I highly recommend them.
Thanks again Sherry for letting me commandeer your blog for awhile and congrats on your followers!

Interview w/ Julie Kagawa and a contest!

First up to help celebrate reaching 100 followers is the wonderul Julie Kagawa, whose book The Iron King was just released. She was kind enough to stop by and answer a few questions.

Q:Thanks for joining us today Julie, can you start off by telling us a little bit about yourself?

A: A little bit about myself, huh? Hm, how to make it sound interesting? Well, I'm half-asian, I like manga and anime (and bishounen), I used to be a dogtrainer, I grew up in Hawaii, I once had a pet tarantula, and my favorite way to relax is killing something on the Wii, XBox, or PS3. Oh, and I'm a ninja. (shh, don't tell.)

Q: Will The Iron King be a stand alone novel or can we be expecting a sequel sometime in the future?

A: It's the first of a trilogy, actually. The second book is called The Iron Daughter, which comes out this August, and the last book is called The Iron Queen.

Q: How did you get your start in writing?

A: You just start writing. Really, that's the secret. I didn't have any special instruction or attend any college classes, I just started writing. Granted, I went to a few writing workshops, but they were more for honing skills, not for getting started. If you want to write, just sit down and do it. :)

Q: Anything in the works?

A: I do have a couple projects planned for after The Iron Fey series, but
they're kinda secret at the moment. I'm excited, though.

Q: What are some of your favorite books/authors?

A: Favorite books? Oh, goodness. The full list would be too long to post. I'll name a FEW favorites. Poison Study, Perfect Chemistry, Harry Potter, The Lightning Thief, Tithe, Lord of the Rings, The Fox Woman, Assassin's Apprentice, Bird-by-Bird, Anne of Green Gables, Memoires of a Geisha, Helm, Song in the Silence, anything by Jim Butcher, anything by Neil Gaiman ... okay, I'll stop now.

Silly Randomness:

Chocolate or vanilla: Chocolate

Fav. Animal: Fox (real) or dragon (mythical)

Televisions shows or movies: Castle, NCIS, Bones, Buffy, Firefly

Nickname: I was called "Skunk" in high school. Didn't really appreciate that nickname much, lol!

Thanks so much for taking the time out to join us today, I really appreciate it, as i'm sure the readers do too! Hope you have a great day!

100 Followers Celebration Announcement!

Ok so you all know I recently hit 100 followers! I want to say thank you to you all and what better way than hosting a contest, or how about many contests....

I decided instead of hosting one contest with three winners, I will host multiple contests in the next couple of weeks. Probably around 8 but at least 5. So that's at least 5 winners, but probably more! How does that sound??

I have some pretty kickass authors stopping by to help celebrate, and with each one I will be offering up one of those authors books to the winner. At least one will be signed, some will include swag...

I'll be posting the first one tomorrow so make sure you stop back by to check it out!

Have a great night everyone!

Waiting on Wednesday (1)

In the effort to have some set memes, I have decided to do Wow, which is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted here, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Since this is my first WoW, I will start off small, listing one upcoming release in the next couple of months and one that will be released later in the year.

First off is Token of Darkness by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes, which is scheduled to be released Feburary 9th.

Here is the description from goodreads: "Cooper Blake has everything going for him—until he wakes from a car accident with his football career in ruins and a mysterious, attractive girl by his side. Cooper doesn’t know how Samantha got there or why he can see her; all he knows is that she’s a ghost, and the shadows that surround her seem intent on destroying her.

No one from Cooper’s old life would understand what he can barely grasp himself. . . . But Delilah, the captain of the cheerleading squad, has secrets of her own, like her ability to see beyond the physical world, and her tangled history with Brent, a loner from a neighboring school who can hear strangers’ most intimate thoughts. Delilah and Brent know that Cooper is in more trouble than he realizes, and that Samantha may not be as innocent as she has led Cooper to believe. But the only way to figure out where Samantha came from will put them all in more danger than they ever dreamed possible."

Another book I can't get out of my head is The Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare, which will be released August 31, 2010. It will be the first in a new series titled The Infernal Devices. For those of you that have read Clare's Mortal Instruments series, this new series is based prior to the events of MI. And while there will be names you recognize, the story is based on new characters.

Unfortunately this is the only description I could find (from goodreads):

"Tessa Gray descends into Victorian London's dark underworld to search for her missing brother, with the mysterious Shadowhunters as her only allies."

And no picture for you, sorry! But i'll be sure to post the cover when it becomes available. I think this is the book I am anticipating the most. I can't wait to read it! :)

Alright so that's my WoW, I hope I did it right! :)

Award timeeee! :)

Sooo I was given some new awards the other day, and one of them personally means a lot because it's one of my closest blogging friends. I must admit, that when I first started blogging I never knew the kinds of opportunities that I would find. I'm surrounded my some awesome people on a daily basis, and awesome authors and I get to do something that I love to do. I suddenly find myself using all of my free time to check everyones blog for recent posts, and chatting online with new friends. If you had told me last summer that I would be doing this on a daily basis, I would have laughed. But now I am thankful that I started this, and I couldn't be more happy. Ok enough with my sappy, heartfelt speech, i'll move on to the awards! :)

Both of these were given to my by Lovelymisslucy @ Delightful Reviews!

If you don't follow her, you should. She's an awesome blogger and friend!

The Humane Award is first up.

What the award says:

This award is to honor certain bloggers that are kindhearted individuals. They regularly take part in my blog and always leave the sweetest comments. If it wasn't for them, my site would just be an ordinary book review blog. Their blogs are also amazing and are tastefully done on a daily basis. I thank them and look forward to our growing friendship through the blog world.

I am passing this on to:

Back to Lucy @ Delightful Reviews b/c she is always around here somewhere!
Shannon O'Donnell @ Book Dreaming
Jemi Fraser @ Just Jemi
and
Kirthi @ Pages

All of the above bloggers always have something nice to say, and I really appreciate it!

And now...

The Blogger Buddie Award

I am only giving this to my two closest blogging buds. One obviously is Lucy @ Delightful Reviews, I know you just gave it to me but I'm giving it back to you because you know that you've been a part of my blogging since the beginning practically. And to Kari @ A Good Addiction. We've become close lately, especially since Kari started up her bookclub forum, and we talk everyday. So thank you both for being with me on this journey of awesomeness. I'm glad you're there for me to share my ups and downs with!

Alright, those are my two new awesome awards.

(I feel like i'm selling you off or something Lucy I linked your blog three times... but i'm not I swear! hehe)

Have a great night everyone!!!

Review: The Dark Divine by Bree Despain

(Purchased by me)

The time has arrived. I have finished The Dark Divine by Bree Despain.
I have waited a long, long, longggg time to read this book. It was worth the wait. But before I dive into my review i'll post the summary of the book according to Goodreads:

"Grace Divine, daughter of the local pastor, always knew something terrible happened the night Daniel Kalbi disappeared--the night she found her brother Jude collapsed on the porch, covered in his own blood--but she has no idea what a truly monstrous secret that night held.

The memories her family has tried to bury resurface when Daniel returns, three years later, and enrolls in Grace and Jude's high school. Despite promising Jude she'll stay away, Grace cannot deny her attraction to Daniel's shocking artistic abilities, his way of getting her to look at the world from new angles, and the strange, hungry glint in his eyes.

The closer Grace gets to Daniel, the more she jeopardizes her life, as her actions stir resentment in Jude and drive him to embrace the ancient evil Daniel unleashed that horrific night. Grace must discover the truth behind the boy's dark secret...and the cure that can save the ones she loves. But she may have to lay down the ultimate sacrifice to do it--her soul."

My review: very minor spoilers, don't worry I won't ruin it for you! :)

Where to start? I suppose I will start with the fact that this has to have been the best kept secret ever involving any book I have ever read. I will not include details that will spoil this surprise, I want you to be as excited as I was when I found out what was going on. I knew from the beginning it was a paranormal of some sort, I just didn't know what kind. I was lucky enough to avoid any reviews that slipped up so when finally catching on it was a surge of emotions. Excitement, man was I excited. Shock/surprise. Yup Bree Despain knows how to weave the details in a novel. Enjoyment. Yes I enjoyed it very much. One thing that bothered me was that the paranormal action doesn't really occur until further into the book. Way further. But I can honestly say that it didn't take away from the novel at all. In fact, it probably made me that much more eager to continue on to see where it was leading. Maybe that is actually a reason why this book is sooo good. It stands apart from a lot of paranormal YA because it can stand without the paranormal factors. The characters are strong, the plot is strong. I would have continued reading even if something fantasy didn't eventually trickle into the scheme of things. Grace is a great lead character. She stands up for her beliefs and does what she thinks is right no matter what anyone said and I loved that about her. Did I mention I love Daniel? *swoons* Ahem.. anyways.... I recommend this book to everyone. I know, I personally will be passing the word along to everyone I know who reads, to read this one. I read in a comment somewhere about someone hearing that this was somewhat similar to Twilight. Ehhh wrong. I wouldn't compare the two books and I certianly wouldn't say they were similar. I love the Twilight books and I now love this book, but for reasons completely different for each book. Oh and there is a sequel right? *crosses fingers* Please tell me there's a sequel?! :)

I think I will start rating books, it makes it easier then saying yea I liked this or loved this or ughh ok.
I've kind of been doing it anyways but this is my first official rated review.

I give The Dark Divine 5/5.

Hope you enjoyed the review and I hope if you weren't interested before, that you check it out now!

Have a great night!

Rain, rain go away!

Isn't this little guy so cute?! Well, I feel bad because it's raining on him. It's raining here to unfortunately. I hate the rain, especially when it's cold out. Because then your wet and cold, and that's no fun.

I had a short day at work today, left early because there was nothing to do. Hey, I'm not complaining. I was glad to leave, because I was itching to finish reading The Dark Divine. I'll be typing up my review soon, like in ten minutes probably. So stop back by in a bit to see what I thought about it.

I'm going to post a poll on my sidebar and you guys can tell me what to read next. Does that sound good?! I'm expecting the third part of my Amazon shipment today so I'll add those books to it. I even included two books that I have started that I haven't really gotten into, so if you choose one of those, I will trust your opinions and read it! Promise! Alright, go vote!

Oh yea, and I hope you are all having a great day, even if it's crappy weather out, like it is here... :)

In My Mailbox (1)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren.

This is my first ever meme! I've been blogging since August 09 and all i've done are reviews, interviews and just some random stuff but I figured it was time to have a couple set memes each week. I figured hey, why not start with this one!?

So I got some totally awesome books this week!

Beginning of the week- zilch.

Thursday 1/21/10- I received my copy of The Dark Divine by Bree Despain. I ordered it from Amazon along with 7 other books but for some reason it got shipped alone.

Yesterday 1/22/10- I received a signed copy of Secret Life of A Vampire by Kerrelyn Sparks. I won this from Monica at The Bibliophilic Book Blog!

Today 1/23/10- I got another of my Amazon books, Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine. It's no good to me right now though because it's book 6 in The Morganville Vampires series and I need book 3(which i'm waiting for in another shipment from Amazon!).

I also got a signed copy of Freaksville by Kitty Keswick. I won this from the wonderful Joy Preble, author of Dreaming Anastasia, of Joy's Novel Idea.

So there it is, my first IMM post! That was exciting! I can't wait to see what everyone else got!

Have a great night everyone!

Review: Break by Hannah Moskowitz

(Purcahsed by me)

I recently joined a book discussion forum to read some books and discuss them with other bloggers. The creator of this forum, the wonderful Kari from A Good Addiction, picked out the first book a couple of weeks ago and it was none other than Break by Hannah Moskowitz. Here is a little bit about Break.

I yanked this summary from Goodreads:

"Jonah is on a mission to break every bone in his body. Everyone knows that broken bones grow back stronger than they were before. And Jonah wants to be stronger—needs to be stronger—because everything around him is falling apart. Breaking, and then healing, is Jonah's only way to cope with the stresses of home, girls, and the world on his shoulders. This is the story of his self-destructive spiral, his rock-bottom moment, and how he finally learns to accept help and find true strength through recovery."

I tend to fail at trying to explore other realms of writing. I generally stick to YA Paranormal/Fantasy. You know Vampires and Angels and that kind of thing. I hate to admit it, but I will, I don't think I would have read this if it wasn't on the bookdiscussion forum. Phew I said it! Well, I have to thank Kari, because she picked it out, and I enjoyed it veryyy much.

My thoughts:

The book starts out very strong, right in the action. I LOVE that. So many books that I enjoy have a very slow beginning and they don't start getting good until a little ways in, but not this one. I had started reading it, unfortunately had to stop for something, and when I picked it back up again I read it the whole way through. The pace quickens at the end and I found myself speedreading to find out what was going to happen. The characters are written wonderfully. They interact just as I imagine a family would with those types of problems. One thing that I really enjoyed, was that while I was reading it I could feel the emotions of the characters, mainly the main character, Jonah. While I don't know anyone that is like Jonah or Jesse, I am sure there are people out there with those problems, and even if there wasn't, I would believe it because that is how realistic these characters are. The basis of the book is a very serious one, but Moskowitz adds in a lot of comedic relief which lightens the mood. There are some great lines in here that I found myself laughing out loud to. It is definitely a unique read and I recommend it to anyone and everyone. (4/5 stars=I liked it a lot!)

So don't take my word on it, you should check this book out!

Hope everyone has a great night!

Thanks everyone who has been a loyal follower! I appreciate you all! :)

A little bit of everything!

Hey guys! I'm still here, just busy working and trying to figure out what's going on with college in the fall. I have been doing so much yet I feel like i've done nothing these past couple of days, where does the time go?!
Anyways, don't forget to check out my contest page for my two current contests, and if I reach 100 followers I will be hosting yet another! Five more to go!

On a side note, I traded in some textbooks on Amazon and I got the money in my account yesterday so of course I bought some new books. I can not wait, and to get free shipping(otherwise it would have costed 60 bucks) I have to wait like forever but i'll take it! They won't even ship out until 25th, but I have some other new books that I got from Barnes and Noble last week to hold me over. I'm currently reading Firespell and Beautiful Creatures. Yes both at the same time, i'm weird like that.

Here's what I ordered:

Fallen
The Dark Divine - I CANNOT wait to read this, oh but I have to!!! :(
The Maze Runner
Books 3-7 in the Morganville Vampires Series - One of my new favorites! It's soooooo good!

Yay!! To top that off my mom got 7 new books, some Sherrilyn Kenyon stuff and Kim Harrison, so she's pretty psyched too!

I had to get Wildfire season 2 also because I just love that show!

There's so many books coming out in the next couple months that I think this will be it for book buying for a while so I can save up some money for when they all come out.

Hope everyone has a great day! I'll post reviews on those two book as soon as I finish reading them!
