Review: Firespell by Chloe Neill

I FINALLY got the chance to actually read and finish Firespell. I really got into it last night and read for as long as I could, but I had to get some sleep and I finished the last couple of chapters today! Here's a little summary for you.

(Copy purchased by me)

Summary from Goodreads:

"As the new girl at the elite St. Sophia’s boarding school, Lily Parker thinks her classmates are the most monstrous things she’ll have to face…

When Lily’s guardians decided to send her away to a fancy boarding school in Chicago, she was shocked. So was St. Sophia’s. Lily’s ultra-rich brat pack classmates think Lily should be the punchline to every joke, and on top of that, she’s hearing strange noises and seeing bizarre things in the shadows of the creepy building.

The only thing keeping her sane is her roommate, Scout, but even Scout’s a little weird—she keeps disappearing late at night and won’t tell Lily where she’s been. But when a prank leaves Lily trapped in the catacombs beneath the school, Lily finds Scout running from a real monster.

Scout’s a member of a splinter group of rebel teens with unique magical talents, who’ve sworn to protect the city against demons, vampires, and Reapers, magic users who’ve been corrupted by their power. And when Lily finds herself in the line of a firespell, Scout tells her the truth about her secret life, even though Lily has no powers of her own—at least none that she’s discovered yet…"

My review(minor spoliers below):

    It seems that most of the books I pick up lately are waiting until further into the book to get really good. Not that this wasn't good in the beginning, but I guess I just like more, wether it be action, mystery, anything. It wasn't until about halfway through where I really started getting into it and it became a book I didn't want to put down. I'm glad I read it through, because I have to say everything fell together quite nicely. While it includes some paranormal that it has in common with other books, i.e magic, the elements of it are different from anything i've seen. I won't mention how exactly because I enjoyed learning about it in pieces until it all made sense. I loved most of the characters. I have to say Lily is one of my new favorite female leads. From the way she mentally evaluates situations, it seems that she is not really sure of herself, but when she acts out her feelings its completely different, she is quite the smooth talker and I love her comedic comebacks. I found I enjoyed a lot of the conversations that took place because the characters were so comfortable with themselves, nothing seemed forced, and everything flowed smoothly. I also loved Lily's new BFF Scout, her headstrong weirdo suitemate. The characters I liked the least were the brat pack. I almost wish they were more mean and less gossipy. It seemed that they were just more in the way then an actual problem. The only negative thing I would have to say is the main conflict comes very close to the end of the book and I wish there was more afterwards. It was like everything was solved and then it ended and I very much wanted it to continue, yes I liked it that much. But I know Chloe is busy working on the Dark Elite #2 and I can now say it is a book I am very much anticipating because I just have to know what is going to happen with some of my new favorite characters! :)

As far as the cover goes, I love it! That's exactly how I see Lily so it worked well for me, and it generally piqued my interest before I even read the book so that's always good!

****=four stars
